Google’s new icon (favicon) = BLECH

by Kristan

Google recently unveiled a new favicon (that little square symbol that shows up next to the URL input bar of your browser and/or the tabs. Voilá:googlefavicon_0109

My reaction: EW.

This was the original design submitted by André Resende, and it is MUCH nicer:favicon_andre

There were also a lot of other designs earlier on in the process, MANY of which are nicer than what Google ultimately chose/bastardized.

What do you think about the new icon? Which option is your favorite?

I totally noticed that too and was like, hey, when did that happen. Two seconds later. Okay whatever. I like the original better, but maybe they were going for offbeat. I’m very glad they chose one with a lowercase g.

To me it’s not offbeat, it’s like a kid did it, and not in a cute way.

I just don’t get why they saw a need to change it from what was submitted at all… MAYBE just brighten the color palette. But what they did was make the g harder to read.

i think is ugly and the original was slightly better… sigh…

Don’t you wish it were an April Fool’s joke? Too bad it’s like 3 months early.
