Resabios de Amargura or That Bitter Cabaret
I went to see one of the last shows of the New Works Festival by the theater and dance students because a classmate was a part of this production, and I really enjoyed it. To quote, “This campy mixture of song, comedy, and social critique follows the story of a Puerto Rican diva that loves her country, but feels attracted to the “outside”. She leaves for the more promising and glamorous U.S., but things don’t turn out quite as planned. Will she stay? Will she go back home? Is there a home to go back to?”
Just to give you a taste of the comedy, the music choice was such fun even if I don’t understand much Spanish. What’s the Point by Laura Freeman and my personal favorite, Protoplasma by Lilina Felipe. (This isn’t what I saw, but Beliza Torres Narvaez did use this song with fun vigor in her performance.)
