A legacy of change, Mexic-Arte
My friend Alex works at Mexic-Arte Museum, and while I’ve been to several museums in Austin, I’ve never actually been here so I thought it’s about time! They’re actually celebrating 25 years and have a lot of stuff going on so I recommend checking them out. Right now they’ve pulled out much of their permanent collection for “A Legacy of Change.”
(Okay my sentiments here have no relation to the artwork, but I just love what it says next to the refried beans, “Con cada beso que me das you te quiero mas y mas.” It’s very sweet and who wouldn’t want to hear that. But I guess there is some irony here in these screenprints by using food when discussing love.)
(I believe this table is from their 2002 Brazilian Visual Poetry exhibition.)
From the Saturday symposium, I really loved the passion that Carlos brought and what he said about museums need to be a part of the community, not apart from the community. Maybe it’s just me, but I thought it was really impressive that their public outreach comes in the form of healthcare, like providing mammograms to women. They also keep their admission free, especially when they get feedback from visitors saying it is their first time to a museum.
